SSC CGL preparation strategy for beginners

If you are starting SSC CGL preparation, the hardest part is knowing what to do first. This order works for most beginners.
1. Learn the exam before you study
Read the latest notification and understand the sections, marks and timing. Then take one mock test cold. It will feel hard, and that is the point: it shows you your starting point.
2. Build basics section by section
- Quantitative Aptitude: arithmetic first (percentages, ratio, profit and loss, time and work), then algebra and geometry.
- Reasoning: series, analogies, coding-decoding and syllogisms are quick to improve with practice.
- English: vocabulary and grammar rules in short daily sessions, plus reading practice for comprehension.
- General Awareness: a little every day beats long sessions before the exam.
3. Practise by topic
After learning a topic, solve a set of questions on it straight away and read every solution. Aim for accuracy first and speed second.
4. Move to full-length mocks
Once your topics are in shape, take full mocks under the real 60-minute limit, ideally a few a week, and review each one properly (see our guide on how to analyse a mock test).
5. Keep a weekly rhythm
Plan each week: topic practice on most days, one or two mocks, and one review day. Adjust the plan each week from your results rather than from how you feel.
